Its narrow, steep cobblestone streets wind through the old town, giving visitors a close-up view of the city’s unique stone architecture and traditional homes. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended, as some streets can be quite uneven and hilly.

To reach sites like Gjirokastër Castle, be prepared for a bit of an uphill walk—but the panoramic views are well worth the effort. Guided walking tours are also available and are a great way to learn about the city's rich history and hidden corners.

Taxis are available for longer distances or trips outside the city, such as to nearby villages or natural attractions. While public transport is limited within Gjirokastër, intercity buses and minibuses (furgons) connect the town with other parts of Albania.
